Welding Positions

This article is about different welding test positions used in Plate Welding, Pipe Welding & Stud Welding.

Plate Welding Test Positions

In plate welding, we have four different positions namely;

  1. Flat position (1G or 1F)
  2. Horizontal Position (2G or 2F)
  3. Vertical Position (3G or 3F)
  4. Overhead Position (4G or 4F)

Note: 1. G Designates groove welding (V-groove, J-groove, U-groove etc.)
          2. F Designates fillet welds (“T” – Joint, Lap Joint etc.)

FLAT WELDING POSITION (1G OR 1F)

FLAT WELDING POSITION (1G OR 1F)

In flat welding the welders head remains above the test coupon.

HORIZONTAL WELDING POSITION (2G OR 2F)

HORIZONTAL WELDING POSITION (2G OR 2F)

In horizontal weld position, movement of electrode shall be in horizontal plane. We have two different welding techniques in horizontal welding, these are;

  1. Rightward technique
  2. Leftward Technique
VERTICAL WELDING POSITION (3G OR 3F)

VERTICAL WELDING POSITION (3G OR 3F)

In vertical weld position, movement of electrode shall be in vertical plane. We have two different welding methods in vertical welding, these are;

  1. Uphill
  2. Downhill
OVERHEAD WELDING POSITION (4G OR 4F)

OVERHEAD WELDING POSITION (4G OR 4F)

Overhead position is one of the most difficult positions because welder has to work against the gravity. In overhead welding, the test coupon (or workpiece) remains above the head of the welder.

Pipe Welding Test Positions

In pipe grove welding, we have four positions;

  1. 1G (Rotated)
  2. 2G
  3. 5G
  4. 6G (Inclined at 450)

pipe welding positions 1G, 2G, 5G, 6G

In pipe fillet welding, we have five positions;

  1. 1F (Rotated)
  2. 2F
  3. 2FR (Rotated)
  4. 4F
  5. 5F

Pipe fillet weld position 1F, 2F, 2FR, 4F, 5F

Stud Welding Test Positions

In stud welds, we have three positions, namely;

  1. 1S
  2. 2S
  3. 4S

stud welding position 1S, 2S and 4S

The 1S position is more or less like flat position, welders head will be above the weld joint.

2S position is similar to horizontal position, welder will move the electrode in horizontal plane.

4S position is similar to overhead position, welder’s head will be below the welding joint.

  1. upload videos on all welding positions. You did not explained about 1G 2G etc in pipes and 1S 2S etc in stud welding

  2. Dear Mr. Imran Khan
    Thank you for visiting my website. I am planning to upload videos and articles related to Pipe welding and stud welding positions as well as Procedure for writing WPS, steps to be followed for PQR, Heat treatment, complete details of some of the most popular welding processes etc. It will take around 2 to 3 months, please keep in touch for the updates
    Regards

  3. Sir, please tell me, supposed we qualified WPS in 1G position, then this WPS/PQR can we used for welder qualifications test in shop floor for 2G, 3G, 4G position. (Welder qualifications)

  4. JAGADISH MOHANTY

    Actually I m not found 6g position root welded pipe where we can easily find out all formula
